What is an EORI Number?
Assigned by the customs authority within the Member State to economic operators (businesses) and persons, an EORI Number (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) is a unique numerical reference. For customs clearance purposes in a Member State an Economic Operator is able to obtain an EORI number which is valid throughout the Community. The Economic Operator can then use the number for any communications or dealings he or she has with other EC customs authorities, an example being a customs clearance.
Do I need an EORI Number?
You will need an EORI Number if you are involved in customs activities, such as customs clearance of import consignments arriving at a UK seaport or airport. You will need to apply for an EORI number using the HMRC application form, a copy of which we can send to you by email, please contact us to request a copy.
What if I am VAT registered already?
If your business is already VAT registered, you will need to check if you already have EORI status activated against your existing VAT number. If you have already EORI status then great, otherwise you will need to apply for it using the application form. This is mandatory and until you have the EORI status, you will not be able to import or export goods using your VAT number.
How long does it take?
Applying for an EORI number is very straight forward and we will assist you if you require any help or guidance. As a rule of thumb it usually takes 2 to 3 working days for your email to arrive with notification of the number and it is usually activated (live) the day after you receive the email confirming the number.
